One Hour From Paradise – Bermuda

Located 2.5 hrs from New York, this is a fantastic romantic getaway for a 3-4 day weekend that won’t leave you wondering “when did I have a hole in your wallet?” (the airlines and hotel were packaged for less than $1,500 for a 4-day weekend).

We went in March for the girlfriend’s birthday and it was a little chilly, so I’d suggest you go closer to summer to have perfect weather.  That said, we loved the fact that it was not busy with tons of people and given that it’s only a hop-scotch-dash from New York, you don’t have to catch a red-eye or anything that silly to get there.  We got in early in the morning and decided to take public transportation around the island.  That wasn’t such a smart idea given that public transportation is infrequent at best, so I would hire a moped straight away (be warned though, that if you haven’t ridden a moped before, you may have difficulties renting a double seated moped).

We stayed at Fairmont Hamilton Princess which is in the City of Hamilton. The hotel was great (rooms were large, service was impeccable and ocean view was perfect) and the afternoon tea service is an absolute must, but for a romantic getaway, I would suggest you stay at the other Fairmont located in Southampton where you more away from the “city” and closer to the beaches.

There’s tons to do in Bermuda including golfing, boating, snorkeling and sight-seeing (the forts, churches and crystal caves), but we seemingly managed to parlay into only a few of these activities. We spent most of the time riding around in our moped and stopping off at the various beaches. The south part of the island was definitely the highlight and the so called “pink” beaches in the north side of the island aren’t really pink. In fact, as far as we could tell, they didn’t even have the hint of pink, so I would give them a miss if you don’t want to spend a lot of time riding around.

In terms of food, it was delicious, though be prepared to pay prices that are roughly equivalent to New York City outings. The highlight was a restaurant at Elbow Beach Hotel (which turns out to be a Mandarin Oriental Hotel) where we celebrated the girlfriend’s birthday. The food was fantastic (exquisitely prepared with fresh ingredients that was put together with the flair that you would find at a higher end New York restaurant) and the setting is great since you are sitting right by the ocean with the waves lapping close by.

So, if you are looking for a place with lots of beaches, delicious food and charming architecture, Bermuda is the place to venture with the other half.  Personally, I thought the best part of the trip was being able to zip around the island on a moped with the girlfriend sitting behind me, but for the girlfriend it was lying on the grass at West Whale Bay watching the sun set into the ocean. Either way, I think you will find something fantastic in Bermuda.
