Doing Good For Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving is approaching, we begin to think about all the things we are thankful for.  There is no better way to show your appreciation for all you have by selflessly giving a few hours of your time to helping others.  Bring a date to the event and do good together.

This Saturday, help the Immaculate Conception Church prepare food baskets to give to the less fortunate.  The church is easily accessible via the #2 train and get off Gun Hill Road Station.  Of course, you can feel free to bring donations or canned food.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

– 9am meet at Ave Maria Hall (lower Church)

– 9am to 11am put the food baskets together

– 11am Church doors open to distribute food to people

– 12:30pm lunch (Thanksgiving lunch will be provided for volunteers) and Thanksgiving blessing.  For the volunteer celebration, please bring something for a potluck party.

I spoke to the coordinator and there is no limit on the number of volunteers, just show up at the venue at 9am.  For more information, go to their website.

Then, on Sunday, treat yourself to a Cupcake Crawl. The group will visit 5 of the best cupcake shops, on the Lower East Side and the East Village. The tour will begin at Baby Cakes, and continue to the following bakeries; Sugar Sweet Sunshine, Butter Lane, Dessert Club and Crumbs.

The event takes place from 11am to 12:30pm.  They will also be accepting donations where 100% of the proceeds will help support the good work of Food Bank For New York City, a non-profit helping to feed the hungry.

Meet the tour guide with the red ball cap saying Walking Tours Manhattan on Sunday November 22, 2009 at 11am at Baby Cakes 248 Broome St., bet. Orchard & Ludlow Sts. The tour lasts 1 1/2 hours. Walking distance is 1 1/4 mile.  For more information, visit their website.
