When Should You Ask For A Second Date?

People tend to think that asking a girl out (or asking a guy out) is the most difficult part of dating, but personally, I think the hardest part takes place after that first date.  When you ask someone out on a first date, the worst thing that can happen is they reject you, but that’s fine because you have invested neither time nor feelings.  After the first date, however, you may have developed feelings, spent time and money, and maybe even cultivated hope that you just met “the one.”  Now, you are really nervous; how do you go about securing a second date?  More importantly, when do you ask for this second date?

The “rule of thumb” is supposedly three days, over the phone.  But rules are dead, and traditions are ever evolving.  I think the best thing to do is to indicate that you had a great time, and maybe suggest going to a restaurant you think she would like together.

The conversation may go something like this:

Nervous Guy – “…so thank you for a wonderful night – great food and great company”
Asked Out Again Already Girl – “aww, I had a really great time too.  I especially loved the McChicken sandwich…”
Nervous Guy – “if you thought that McChicken sandwich was awesome, wait till I take you to this place that makes the TENDERCRISP sandwich…”
Asked Out Again Already Girl – “oh really? wow, that sounds great”

Otherwise, it will go like this:

Nervous Guy – “…so thank you for a wonderful night – great food and great company”
Get Me Out Of Here Girl – “yea, it was okay.  The food wasn’t that great”
Nervous Guy – “sorry you didn’t like your meal that much, maybe I can redeem myself by taking you to this place that makes this awesome TENDERCRISP sandwich next time”
Get Me Out Of Here Girl – “I am going to be busy next time…”

Either way, you will get good indication of how the other person enjoyed herself (himself) and secondly, you don’t have to contemplate over the next three days whether you should call her (him) or not.  Then again, you may have to think of something else to gossip about or find another medium for your angst.

What do you guys think?  Or, have I extricated myself from the dating scene for too long?
