Economy Sucks, I Want A Baby!

“A baby?!  What?! Shocked is an understatement to describe how I felt when this once career driven, high rolling woman executive who used to be my boss (laid off), told me that she is planning to get pregnant now, whereas the thought passed but never stuck in the past.

This reminds me of a story.  A friend told me that since he and his girlfriend didn’t have a lot of money, to pass time, they had sex!  And with unemployment, people have no money but a whole lot of time.  And for good reasons too, it’s fun, burns calories (can’t afford that gym membership anymore) and the act releases endorphins so we don’t get depressed about this crappy economy.

With the global economy down the gutter and many women unemployed, the once career driven women who were too busy with their career to have children are now looking to switch over to motherhood.  Before, to start a family usually means that women had to compromise their career advancement.  Now, the opportunity cost of having children is virtually eliminated due to the lack of job openings.  So now is as good a time as ever to make babies.

The only issue is an obvious one – with one less income and for a few unfortunate families, no income, some can barely support themselves in this expensive city, never-mind a baby.  Nonetheless, if it is within budget, go for it!  You get all the maternity days you want, you won’t have to worry about your boss fussing over your absence and you don’t have to worry about jeopardizing your career advancement.   Better yet, since this downturn is expected to linger a bit, you can rejoin the workforce during the upswing when your baby is slightly older.
